VLSI has been around a long time, there is nothing new ... but as a side effect of progress in the world of computers, there has been a dramatic proliferation of tools that can be used for the design of VLSI circuits. Meanwhile, following Moore's law, the capacity of an IC has increased exponentially in recent years in terms of computing power, the use of the available surface performance. The combined effect of these developments is that now people can put these features several years in the IC, the new open borders. Examples include integrated systems, where intelligent devices are put inside everyday objects, and ubiquitous computing, where the proliferation of small computing devices sizes to such an extent that even the shoes that you can use actually do something useful like monitoring your heartbeats!
